Koh Samui may not be Thailand's most famous snorkeling destination, but it has a surprising secret: the surrounding islands offer excellent snorkeling that rivals more crowded spots like Koh Tao. From the pristine reefs of Ang Thong Marine Park to the shallow coral gardens around Koh Tan, there are spots for every level — and several of our tours include snorkeling equipment and guided stops at the best reefs.
Best Boat-Access Snorkeling Spots
The best snorkeling around Koh Samui requires a boat to reach. These offshore spots have healthier reefs, more marine life, and better visibility than anything you'll find from shore.
Ang Thong Marine Park
The crown jewel of snorkeling near Koh Samui. This protected national park encompasses 42 islands with pristine coral reefs, crystal-clear water, and an incredible diversity of marine life. You'll see colorful reef fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, and if you're lucky, small reef sharks. Visibility regularly exceeds 15-20 meters during peak season. Our Ang Thong tour (4,400 THB per person) includes multiple snorkeling stops, all equipment, lunch, and a bilingual guide.
Koh Tan (Coral Island)
Just 15 minutes south of Koh Samui by longtail boat, Koh Tan has some of the best accessible coral reefs in the area. The western coast features shallow reefs starting at just 1-2 meters depth, making it perfect for beginners, children, and nervous swimmers. The coral is healthy and colorful, home to parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, and blue-spotted stingrays. Our Koh Tan & Pig Island tour (2,800 THB per person) includes a dedicated snorkeling stop here.
Koh Rap
This uninhabited island southwest of Samui is surrounded by clear water with excellent visibility. The reef here is less visited than Koh Tan, meaning healthier coral and more abundant fish life. Snorkeling at Koh Rap is part of our Koh Rap BBQ experience (3,500 THB per person) — you snorkel the reef and then enjoy freshly grilled seafood on the beach.
Sail Rock (Hin Bai)
Located between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock is considered one of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. While primarily a diving destination, the shallower areas around the rock formation offer advanced snorkelers a chance to see large schools of fish, barracuda, and sometimes whale sharks during the right season (March-May). This spot is accessible via private speedboat charter — contact us via WhatsApp to arrange a custom trip.

If you prefer to snorkel on your own without booking a tour, several spots around Koh Samui offer decent shore-entry snorkeling. Don't expect the same quality as the boat-access spots, but these are free, convenient, and can be enjoyable in the right conditions.
Coral Cove (Ao Thian)
Located between Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast, Coral Cove is a small rocky bay with the best shore-access snorkeling on Koh Samui. The rocky outcrops on both sides of the beach harbor small reef fish, sea urchins, and occasional moray eels. Best visited in calm conditions during the morning when visibility is highest.
Silver Beach (Haad Thong Ta Khian)
A small beach between Lamai and Crystal Bay, Silver Beach has rocky areas on its edges where you can see reef fish and small coral formations. The water is usually clear here, and the beach is less crowded than Chaweng or Lamai, making for a more relaxed snorkeling experience.
Choeng Mon Beach
In the northeast of the island, Choeng Mon has some reef formations accessible from shore, particularly near the rocky headlands. The snorkeling is modest but can be rewarding during calm, clear days. This is a good option if you're staying in this area and want a quick snorkel without traveling far.
Visibility by Season
Water conditions around Koh Samui change dramatically throughout the year. Here's what to expect in each season:

Best months for snorkeling: February through May offers the clearest water and calmest seas. March and April are the peak months, with visibility sometimes exceeding 25 meters at Ang Thong. Water temperature stays between 28-30°C year-round, so you won't need a wetsuit.
Note on Ang Thong: The national park closes annually from approximately November 1 to mid-December due to monsoon conditions. Plan accordingly if Ang Thong snorkeling is a priority.

What We Provide
All Samui Authentic boat tours include mask, snorkel, and fins in standard sizes. Life jackets are also available and strongly recommended for less confident swimmers. If you wear prescription glasses, we recommend bringing your own prescription mask or disposable contact lenses.
Snorkeling Tips for the Best Experience
- Use reef-safe sunscreen — Chemical sunscreens (containing oxybenzone and octinoxate) damage coral reefs. Apply mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen at least 30 minutes before entering the water.
- Don't touch the coral — Coral is a living organism. Even gentle contact can damage it and cause painful scratches or stings. Maintain buoyancy and keep your fins away from the reef.
- Test your mask beforehand — Before getting in the water, try your mask on dry land. Press it to your face without the strap — it should create a gentle suction. Rinse with fresh water if it fogs.
- Snorkel in the morning — Visibility is almost always best before midday, when the sun is high and the wind hasn't yet picked up.
- Stay hydrated — Salt water and sun dehydrate you quickly. Drink water regularly before and after snorkeling.
- Follow your guide — Our guides know exactly where the best coral and fish life are. They'll lead you to spots you'd never find on your own.
